Should we go ahead?

Post by Mordred on Tue Jun 18, 2013 5:01 am

I realise that some have expressed concern about this starting up at all. Is it something we should really pursue? If so, we can put it on hold. Up to you guys, I am easy. I mainly set these forums up so I had a place to put concepts and rule tweaks without constantly interrupting AKD, as I felt rather bad about that.

I'm here, but I will admit I am concerned about the viability of continuing. Losing 2-3 players in one go was a blow, and we are dangerously near (actually on), the absolute minimum players I think are required for this to work at all.

I also think we might have the focus wrong - it was meant to be on player / player interaction, which in my mind meant player / player conflict rather than co-operation. Would things work better if you're working together towards some sort of goal rather than just engaging in a power struggle?

Things would work better if it was cooperation towards a goal IMO.

Also, I'm here.

It's fun and nice to have confrontations and rivalries, but I think having the premise being that people are against each other might turn off some

Player versus player is inevitable, but perhaps it shouldn't be focused in a region that is in need of reconstruction from a RP point of view.

Would we all be noble lords that originated from the lands, we'd see pvp conflict much sooner in the game. Or at least reform the background to a more conquest idea..Chieftains looking to plunder themselves into lasting power.

I am somewhat stuck as to what to do, perhaps start something which is smaller in scale? Perhaps a series of more focused scenarios with a solid end-goal? That would let you experiment more with character set ups, and give us more scope to work at co-operation (at least partially) rather than have everything resting on player conflict?

That should mean less NPCs for me to run, and hopefully letting some of you take over the result crunching (for battles at least!)

One idea I had was trying to reclaim a ruined city - you'd have to hold it against aggressors while building it up. Balance infrastructure production against bolstering defences. Raids on the city would be frequent, but at least you'd have no problem with raiding them back for materials.

That said I realise you are attached to your characters, and I think I can make that work, using new ones or old...

I've tried to quit, but found myself checking the forum today to read something I can really get behind.

Mordred, a scenario focused on cooperation and roleplay sounds like a lot of fun. (perhaps bring old players back? :p)

Also, welcome back Vealdis.. you've missed a lot of drama, but nothing else.

First question is first then... what aspects of Reborn have you liked most / least so far? I am thinking of trimming the meta game down more for this, both to keep it simple, and to reduce the burden on myself.

I am thinking that instead of building baronies to unlock troops (or building as many of them), you'd instead focus on character traits and prestige which grant you soldiers instead.

So you could take "Spearmen II" which increases your available spearmen from 50 to 100. You'd then use your warbands to raid the barbarians, and then use the loot to upgrade the central towns defences, or to improve your own soldier's quality.

I agree,'

Probably the best thing to do is have everyone be the leader of a party (be it a Count, Baron, knight-captain or whatever) and have that party replenish and upgrade over time. Then we'd invade Poinsbruk and upgrade our troops with loot found and experience gained.

For example:
Sir Astor Talbot, representative of Talon March joins the conquest with 200 militia that can all become knights of the Wolf after some significant victories (upgrade to Order knights paid for by prestige gained).

There would be a lot of number crunching..

Another thought I have is to retake Poinsbruk, divide it into sections equal to the amount of (active) players and everyone has to defend their part of the city against barbarian sieges. When things become dire other players can help out at the risk of weakening their own outer walls. (Everyone defends an outer wall and has the options to built extra defences, with the keep functioning like Marleons does now)

Welcome back Vealdis! I apologize for the state of affairs on this board, for I feel responsible for the recent drama hurricane that swept on through. As a result I too had a desire to withdraw, but it is said that a love for an vase is strong, but love for a shattered, reconstructed vase is stronger still.

Regarding the roleplay changes, I'll be happy with any ideas.  I still got Nickolas Ballard as a character, so I'll be set character-wise. Just set up a system and I'll participate.

Stage 1: One player takes the lore initiative and sieges Poinsbruk after a blatant call to arms.

Stage 2: While the besieger protects his siege engineers from attacking barbarians with his Kamos batteries, those that answered the call to arms are forced into several skirmishes with Mystmountain raiders desperate to protect their newfound villages.

Stage 3: After reaching Poinsbruk, the allied forces combine their might and take the outer walls.

Stage 4: While they are forced to protect the outer walls from barbarians answering their chieftain's own call to arms, the players devise and attack the inner walls and the keep.

Stage 5: The outer walls are breached and the players are forced to defend the keep with their now veteran warriors. Will they manage to slay the barbarians and claim Poinsbruk?

Re: Should we go ahead?

Nice ideas Valdir, it got me thinking about this a little more.

My thoughts are that perhaps we should base it in Amala... I'd like to leave Poinsbruk alone for the time being. This takes place what 7-8 years after unification now, so about 12-17 years before the events of PoP4 (I can never remember if its set 20 years or 25 years after PoP3, heh). Seems like a decent time to launch a preliminary expedition to me. Even more so if we skip forward a year or two in the timeline.

I would propose that this is an early expedition sent to Amala in support of the Radiant Cross efforts. Their mission is to land, explore and establish a beach head. They would then need to defend it against Snake incursions until the defences are properly set up for the Radiant Cross to take over.

1. Arrival and exploration of coast line.
2. Selection of beach head (including clearing out the prior Cultists holding that position)
3. Raiding surrounding lands for supplies to build up beach head.
4. Hold the beach head against repeated major attacks.
5. Earn enough joint infrastructure to build the stone fortifications and finish the scenario.

I would put more power in the Council this time. All loot gained from raiding would be put into a central pool, and then administered by the Treasurer. Manpower would also be simplified, and turned into a resource proper (like Gold and Prestige), therefore replenishing forces would actually cost MP but is done instantly meaning less downtime. It's also need bit of an overhaul of backgrounds, traits and quirks but that shouldn't be too bad.

Thoughts?

The fact that this is left unanswered says enough.

What now?
I know that some of you are at odds with the admins and gm's of AKD, and I've lost my patience with some of them spanning the last 2 or 3 years of bickering. Is there anyone here now that would like to just roleplay a few choice free scenes without any rules besides logic in a high fantasy setting?

We could make a scene with the Noldor..we haven't done something like that.. ever. (if you discount the few appearances with the Silvermist in the Laria event)

I'm not that well read when it comes to the elder scrolls (never been able to play the games).
However, I do like A Song of Ice and Fire.. but we'll need to accept the likeliness that our carefully created characters can and will be killed off without mercy when we enter such a setting.

Now that I think about it, I can probably host an event in the GoT theme. Though it will be quick paced because I have less of a life than others.
