IC: The Manor of Farlen Bracken

Post by Valdir on Wed Jul 31, 2013 6:51 am

The Manor of Farlen Bracken would welcome any of the lords of the Steppe if they would travel the distance to Talon March themselves. Count Valdir had decorated and supplied that Manor from his own residence's personal stock and the most hospitable servants had been assigned to do their every bidding.

Servants were beaming with the arrival of every possible lord and the doors to the manor stood wide open. Count Valdir and Baron Farlen were watching the trains of eager participants stroll into the villages, which they had a clear sight off due to the favorable position of the Manor, on top a hill in the west.

A lone man approached the Manor slowly. He steps were short and he seemed to enjoy the view the more he got uphill. He had his hands behind his back and from the distance one could see his mouth moving but no one was near him to hear what he was saying or to whom he was talking.
He stopped his odd behavior shortly before reaching the door. He announced himself with a slight beating on the door. After a very short while a Servant opened the door and he entered.

"Please show me to Count Valdir if he is here, and tell him Count Vincent Margrove has arrived."

The servant lead the man to main hall, but before he could announce the Count, Valdir opened his arms in a warm greeting gesture.

"Count Vincent! I'm delighted that you've come to my little tournament."

Vincent was taken aback by the friendliness of Count Valdir, they had only seen each other a few times and now he wanted to hug him for a greeting. He tried not to show but a blind man would have seen the look on his face. He quickly recovered himself and grabbed one of Valdirs hands in greeting. He covered it with both of his hands and bowed a little to show at least some respect.

"Greetings Valdir, I am honored to have been invited, and I brought 3 of my best men, one for each of the Weapon-classes. I must say you have spared no expenses, even though you helped us so greatly against the Mystmountains."

Valdir noticed the look on his face with mirth. The Count of Talon March had spend the last months in peace, administration and joyful festivities that he had lost a certain cold nobility that was custom.

"I shall enjoy watching them distinguish themselves in the arena's."
He ignored the words of his expenses and the Mystmountain horde, but his face grew more serious quickly.

"Tell me, Count, how are your holdings and your people?"

"I am proud to say that my holdings prosper. The land is full of people doing their daily work and I rarely find the time for activities like these."

Vincent started with a smile but when he finished he looked down.

"Sadly I can't say the same for my people. Nearly 200 Men died in the north and all of them were fathers, husbands, sons or brothers. The ones left behind wished for a happier ending, the same as myself. But I already prepared measures to address this affair."

And again he ended with a smile, "hope dies last" the people say.

"And what about your County, as far as I can see, everything is prospering and growing."

Vincent quickly raised a hand towards a servant to order something to drink and then looked back at Valdir.

"Indeed, it was fortunate that I was not forced to send my farmers and craftsmen north and lose the benefits of their trade, also, it seems that Marleons' downfall brought many new able hands to my holdings as well. The tourney grounds and the villages surrounding it are barely a month old and its people fled the disaster stricken city."

A servant approached them with mead and watered apple-juice.

"I wasn't sure if a servant of Astraea is allowed to drink wine, so I've instructed my servants to keep other beverages nearby."

The count had spoken while he instructed the servant to pour him a cup of mead. Not a moment later a second servant approached them holding fresh water and strong Astigi wine.

"If there is a rule about what you can drink then I have never heard about it, and honestly I don't want to hear about it."

Vincent smiled shortly after this but then quickly grabbed a cup of Water.

"The travel was long and it is quite warm outside so I start with water right now. But please keep the Wine close by. I would like some after I rested and maybe after something to eat. Could we get a seat somewhere? My legs are quite exhausted from the travel."

Vincent emptied the water at once and then let the servant fill it up again.

"Ofcourse," Valdir smiled as he motioned to the free seats at the window and sat down in one. The servants had overheard Vincent and placed two plates of food on the small table between the two chairs.

"Have you personally fought the horde, Count Margrove?"

Vincent sat down and took a small gulp again followed by a small something to eat.

"I am afraid I wasn't able to join the battle. I begged the Lady Tysha to delay the attack for a week at least, if so I would have joined with 400 well trained and well armored men. But I was forced to stay at home to help my people and oversee repairs and healing. Just a few days prior to her call to arms I had a minor struggle with Lady Eadburgha. Unfortunately I lost some men and so wasn't able to join the battle as I had no force to fight with except the men led by my Captain Gunnar."

Vincent looked out the window into the distance, the sound of streets could still be heard up here, even if  it was very silent.

"If only she had waited."

He said the last sentence very silent and almost as if in a dream, he didn't speak to anyone in particular, some 5 seconds after finishing he snapped out of his trance and faced Valdir again with a smile.

"I do hope that you realize that delaying the attack would cost us a month in preparations, just like it would make it more difficult for me to pay the army I send north. Even though I disagreed with Tysha the Lucky before the assault on Poinsbruk and condemned her impulsive action, now I am glad we followed her suggestion and benefited from the knowledge of Count Corax."

Valdir had discussed the subject of Lady Tysha's behavior and the impulsive call to arms one time to many and he didn't seem all to happy now.

"You are right, but there is no need to discuss things that happened, the deed is done and the battle is won, lets just hope we don't have to fight them again too soon."

Just after a small pause Vincent continued.

"How was your time as the first Governor of the steppes? Did you prepare any surprises for us?"

Vincent said this with a big smile on his face. He did not want to start this meeting with such bad blood obviously.

Valdir returned the smile with a mysterious laugh and a sip of mead.

"Hah, I was undermined by Lady Tysha and received various hints of pacts and plots by the lords of this steppe. Even those that follow Astraea did not even mask evading my county. No the task of Governor is not a grateful one, nor would I aspire the position again anytime soon."

He emptied his cup and looked at Vincent with sly eyes.

"Tell me, do you still want a position that makes you the least favorable lord of the Steppe?"

The look on Vincents face became a bit more serious as he heard this.

"I am sorry to hear this Lord Valdir, I had no idea that the unity of the steppe was that much in danger. I hope there have been no threats to your person on these occasions."

Vincent had to stop a second to think about Valdirs question.

"Yes I still want to be Governor, now even more than before. The Governor should be the one leading everyone on the same path, there is no room for plotting or scheming in the steppes, not as long as there are dangers outside our Countys and not as long as we have people to rely on our protection. And for me it is not about who is most liked in the steppes, it is about who cares for a greater good even if this might upset someone."

Vincent then paused shortly again, a low breeze entered through the window bringing a refreshing gust of air.

"I guess you already suspect that I am not only here to watch the tournament. I, as well have a small favor to ask, that only you as Governor can fulfill."

Vincent raised his hand to keep Valdir from replying even though he seemed to make no move.

"I want you to reopen the discussion and polls for the Tax I proposed last month in Marleons. I have looked through my books and estimated the income of the other Countys. I think it is set too high at the moment, regarding the losses of our battles and the now lower Mystmountain thread. I don't expect and answer right now, I just want you to consider this possibility."

Valdir sighed, "I'm afraid I have no such power, milord. If you want to lower the tax, you'll have to bring it up to the new Governor before the upcoming gathering. I am just a mere..placeholder."

"Although, If I were you, I wouldn't propose such a thing. You've fought for the tax and set the amount, coming back to that decision in the second council gathering will make you look weak. Too weak for the position of Governor. Let someone else, someone who has already spoken against the tax and who would have more trouble raising it, to suggest it to the council."

Taking an apple from the nearest plate, Valdir looked a little worried.

"I'm not a greedy man and this tournament shows I can afford the tax, but if you want it lowered I'll give you my vote. For the good of the Steppe."

Vincent smiled as he noticed his mistake.

"I apologize Valdir, I spoke before thinking again, I am sorry to have troubled you with this matter."

He placed his hands together and thought for a second.

"Lord Valdir, I think you mistake me for a different man. I rather be known as weak than make a wrong decision which can lead to more bad things. And right now I am here not to be loved or feared but to make to best possible decisions. And if anyone thinks me weak then I am always available to proof him otherwise."

He just made a small pause after that.

"I have submitted the Tax and so I am responsible for it. It is my duty, and as well my desire to make the best out of it."

Even though the discussion drifted of into something more personal Vincent always stayed calm and kind with a smile on his face.

"But, personally, I wouldn't want an indecisive and weak Governor. When you have to proof someone that you aren't, you've already lost the vote."

"Trust me, Lord Margrove, you don't need a reputation for being weak when dealing with the Northern alliance. Warriors don't respect a wavering commander in battle."

"While that is mostly a proverbial view, there is also a grain of truth to the count's statement. A wavering commander only reaps death within the ranks of his own men."

Izlance Jonson and his knightly companion chose that moment to enter the hall. The knight took a station in a remote corner without sating a word, while Jonson bowed slightly at the two counts.

"Honored Count Bazzano, it is delightful to meet you. I am Izlance Jonson, here to represent Ravenfort's chosen in the upcoming tournament of yours. I felt it would be polite to inform you of our arrival."

Valdir rose from his seat, unsure if he should happy about the man's choice of words, or angry that he had so rudely given his opinion in a conversation between members of the high nobility. Either way, Valdir only showed a wide smile.

"You're welcome here, Izlance. May you enjoy the food and drink from my tables and I wish Ravenfort's champions the best of luck tomorrow."

Valdir's eyes shifted between the newcomer and Count Margrove for a second, but then he added,

"Please, Izlance Jonson, would you join in on our conversation and tell me how Ravenfort fares?"

Jonson gave a curt bow to the men.

"I thank you for your kind offer and words, honoured Count."

The marshal of Ravenfort took half a second to think of an answer to the man's semi-question before answering with a smile.

"Ravenfort has hit good times as of late. We have managed to double the amount of homes since the end of the Campaign against the barbarians. We are making good progress with our rebuilding efforts, I dare say."

"Good, good. I'm glad to hear it-"

A man dressed in chainmail and with a longsword dangling beside him approached Valdir in big steps. His purple eyes acknowledged the others gathered, but they showed fatigue and his blonde hair stuck to his forehead due to his sweat. An exchange of whispers and the clear mention of the name 'Rabastan' and Valdir's earlier grin disappeared.

"I'm afraid I have to excuse myself. A tournament cannot go without incidents it seems..."

Without awaiting a reaction, the Count of Talon March left with the purple-eyed man.
