Silverwood Edge Hex 21

Just as Sir Vincent arrived back home after the meeting his Chancellor was awaiting him with an important letter. After he cleaned himself of the dust of the steppes he entered his chambers. His desk was full of parchment, various reports from his county. Apparently his northerly neighbor raided a village of his, and his men came to late to prevent damage. He read through everything and then arrived at the letter from Sir Nickolas.

"He through it slowly and called his Chancellor into the room. Set up a letter to Sir Simon Lane. Inform him that I will accept his request of a meeting. I will arrive within a few days. And decorate a bit."

As his Chancellor was half way through writing and Vincent read even more reports a messenger arrived. He was covered in dust and breathed heavily. With a nod Vincent invited him and he placed a letter on his desk.

"A Call to Arms my Lord, the Mystmountains are coming to the steppes."

After that he saluted and left as quickly as he came. The Chancellor stopped writing and looked up to him, he came closer and together they read through the letter.

"I think we have something important to do. Finish the letter and then Call the Captain. Inform my wife that I will be up very late today."

It was 3 weeks ago that 200 Men left Silverwood Edge to defend the steppe against their greatest enemy. The wives and children which were left at home waited every day for news of their victory but nothing reached them from the north. Everyone tried to act as normal as possible but the silence was all-embracing. The people knew that the day their Lord Vincent called them to an open meeting that something bad happened. The crowd grew bigger and bigger, mostly women and old men, some with their children. The young men were either on the fields or drafted into the Army.

"People of Silverwood Edge, I have gathered you here today to bring you news of your fathers, sons and husbands fighting the Barbarians of the North. It is dire news I bring to you. Even though the battle is won not many survived. They have fought bravely against their most fearsome Warriors and won, but the cost was too great. The bodies of the deceased will be brought back home so they can be buried were they lived. I am mourning with you my friends and you can sure that I will do anything in my power that they did not die in vain."

With that Count Vincent left the stage. His people left the area slowly and in silence, some were praying to Astrea or whichever god would listen to them. He did not care, the only important thing now was that their pain would vanish.

The coming days many carts loaded with wood and stone were leaving the main area heading for the hills. Just a few hours after leaving they vanished behind some hills. The way was heavily Guarded and no one was allowed to walk any closer. Quickly many rumors spread throughout the county, it kept their mind of the return of the remainder of the army which was sent north. At least for a short time life returned to normal.


The day the army returned was feared by almost everyone. At the head of the column marched Captain Gunnar and behind him the rest of his army. They walked slowly but they kept their heads high. They defeated an Army much greater than themselves and earned themselves a place in history. 200 men left and only 27 returned. Behind them came many Carts with wooden coffins on them, it took some time for the silence to break but once it happened it did not stop for the rest of the day. The whole county was mourning and crying for the lives lost. The Soldiers which just saw death and evaded him couldn't keep their tears to themselves either. The group stopped when they reached the center of the town where Gunnar fell into the arms of the crying Vincent.

How long would it take to recover from that loss?
