Southrun County

Post by Andros Vaaron on Wed Jul 17, 2013 8:20 am

Situated at a strategic point at the head of one of the regions few rivers, Southrun County was a flashpoint of armed conflict between the forces of Sarleon and the Empire since time beyond rememberance. The Jatu, lured by the promise of battle, glory and riches, descended from their Steppes to this fertile river valley, eager to contest control of the region with their southern neighbours. For the few common folk that chose to remain rather than flee, life was a permanent struggle, fraught with strife, intimidation and the ever looming threat of war. Only the high quality crops that the region yielded were enough to convince them to stay and harvest its bounty.

Southrun County, fortunately, endured a considerable period of peace following the unification of Pendor, a peace that saw many an eager settler flock to the valley, seeking to build for themselves a new life away from the violence of the past. Soon the villages and homesteads of the county flourished, and Southrun became well known as one of the most prosperous regions in the East. This fragile peace, however, was not to last, as all too soon the land was once again ripped apart by many a faction vying for power, a period of Pendor's history that would become known as The Noble Wars. The tranquil river valley again found itself a hotbed of contention as many a lord fought ceaselessly to bring the land under their fold. As it was in the past, the settlements of Southrun found themselves put to the torch, its fields razed and its people captured, forced to flee or butchered. The ill will of this picturesque county left a black mark upon the land, as few would again risk the attempt to settle this land again, even after the war had been brought to a close. That is, until now.

Under the governance of the county's first regional lord, Count Andros Vaaron, the people once displaced from this land have slowly began to trickle back into its remaining vestiges of civilisation, seeking to rebuild what had once been, to to perhaps finally establish a lasting community to be left behind for generations to come. The young lord Andros, closer to commoner himself than noble, seeks to see this land prosper again under his rule. His approach to leadeship sees the needs and wants of the people put above all else, and asks of them nothing that he would not ask of himself, and thus he has a strong bond with those he lords over. Popular as he may be though, with so many new dynasties established in the East, and with the growing threat of barabarian invasion to the North, some still ask; is it still possible that Southrun County can know a lasting peace?

A blob of mud flew up from where he dug in his shovel, and hit him square in the eye. Under his breath, Andros cursed and he scrubbed it away furiously. Only when his eye was again clear, did he take notice of the small group of young children who now stood giggling at the spectacle of the dirt encrusted young lord. Andros grinned widely before reaching down into the mud to grab a sizeable handful.

"Oh, so you think thats funny do you, you wee rascals? Well, i'll teach you to laugh at your Lord!"

With that he let fly, catching a young boy on his left arm. The children let out squeals of joy as they turned and ran toward the village, laughing as they went. And so to was Andros as he leaned against his embedded shovel watching them go.

"You best make sure they dont tell their parents, or else his lordship may find himself minus a head"

The voice startled him, but it was one he knew well. Andros turned to look up at the road to the warrior, armored and mounted as he was.

"Godwin! You actually came back rather promptly! All the brothels in Marleons been burned to the ground then?"

Godwin let out a loud guffaw as he dismounted. Andros approached him, and the two exchanged a firm handshake.

"Good to see you well my old friend. How was Marleons?"

Godwin grimaced slightly as he recalled the scene.

"Its...not a pretty sight, lets leave it at that. I would rather remember my old home as it was, not as it is now. And besides, im sure you are eager to hear my report"

Andros nodded his head in acknowledgement.

"I see. Aye, I shall hear your report. But first let us make back for the estate. Im sure you could use some refreshments. And a bath, good God man!"

At that Godwin couldnt help but halt abruptly to eye over his lord, caked from head to foot in mud and soil as he was. To anyone not of Southrun County, it would be he that appeared the Lord, and Andros but a grubby farmer. He shook his head and fell back into line with his lord.

"Some good food and ale would not go unwelcome. Oh, and whilst we walk, I should bring you up to speed on the nature of our new neighbours. Theres one in particular that seems eager to meet you..."
