Re: Character Ideas
Alright...got most of the Bio done but I just got one question.
After reading some of the previous forums and posts I found out that at one point Konigur Valdis was forced to flee thanks to the merchant princes.
I wish to play as one of those merchants (or a merchant that gained power and infleunce thanks to the unification) but would getting the Konigur to flee be enough to get royally appointed?

Re: Character Ideas
Probably, though I think "Bought Title" might be more likely in that situation. His family donated some funds to the anti-Konigur fund, and then used to the resulting return to buy a title and earn some aristocratic legitimacy.
Same could be said for the Royal Appointment though, titles for financial favours is entirely plausible.

Re: Character Ideas
Alright, how does this look?
And for the story!

Counties: 1
Captains: None starting
And for the story!
- Spoiler:
- The history of House Abaddon, and Tysha in particular, is linked to the fortunes of the Order of the Lion. The living members of the dynasty trace their lineage to a Lion knight from the time of the Order's first disappearance. More recently, Sir Tytos Abaddon was a knight of the Order of the Lion in service to the Kings of Sarleon. After two marriages that failed to produce children, Lord Tytos married an heiress from Janos to multiple his fortune. The House had always been wealthy, due to a variety of holdings throughout the whole of Pendor. Through sly dealings these assets were protected during the age of disunion and the frequent wars that ravaged Pendor. Although lacking castles of their own, doubtlessly through selling their lands multiple times to avoid being victim to the fortunes of war, the House was known to be amongst the richest in old Sarleon.
The Wars of Unification put an end to the prominence of Tytos Abaddon, who had risen to the rank of Captain within the Lions. Along with the rest of his Order, Sir Tytos was killed in the Siege of Sarleon by the soldiers of the future King Mordred and Duke Darlion. His eldest son and squire escaped the capital with a portion of the treasury, the family jewels, and his life. To escape the inevitable assassins of King Mordred and his Griffon duke, the heir to House Abaddon took holy vows as a priest, leaving his younger sister to inherit the wealth of the House. Most properties were seized, either by the Crown or the new lords that held King Mordred's cities in his name. Still, the gold in their hands remained considerable. Tysha became the wealthy heiress to a cursed name.
Instead of seeking shelter in a good marriage, or crossing the sea to live in Amala or Barclay, Tysha began hiring those in similar situations. Unlanded knights, dispossessed second sons, veteran soldiers, foreign adventurers, and would-be outlaws became her new family. To avoid suspicion, she hired her band of soldiers out to the highest bidder, usually the mercenary-reliant lords of Marleons and Avendor. The Law of Halves provided a boon to mercenaries usually not found in times of peace.
The Noble Wars were a productive time for the young captain, although she led from the front she often left the tactics to her bastard-born uncle or nominally cleric brother. By the time the wars ended, Tysha had joined the secretly reformed Order of the Lion. Her new contacts through the nobility, her ancestral links to the merchants, and her own battle-forged reputation among the free companies gave the traitor-orphan a great deal of influence given her relatively humble beginning. Now the lady of a County in the Steppe, Tysha has disbanded her company and done what no Abaddon has in centuries: Held court in a castle.

Actually, instead of bought title I will go with created title. More or less seizing the holding during the Noble Wars with the assistance of, well, the nobles. For the two quirks one will be independently wealthy (to keep with that general theme), but I'm not sure which other is more suited. It's between Fierce Friends and Paranoid. On the one hand, Tysha has the background of mercenaries and thus Adventurers. On the other, she is a sekret Lion and has that whole history.

I suppose I'll go with the Adventurers. I like higher numbers of things and I won't have to deal with explaining open (or not!) Lion Knights just yet.

Fierce friends would be cooler. The Lions are proud and in my mind that clashes with paranoia.

I'm not necessarily using the traits for their names, although both fit. Paranoia wouldn't be so much... insane paranoia, but that constant fear that someone is out to get you. (In Tysha's case, that may well be so.) In this case it's which type will be more suited as the personal guard that she maintains 24/7... 5 potent and powerful knights, or a retinue of 25 skilled soldiers?

I would go with 5 potent and strong knights...I wouldn't like an entourage of 25..would forget their names.

Re: Character Ideas
Two votes for Fierce Friends it is, and the edits have been made. (Yay for Group Think!)
Naming them is a useful idea. It's a potential source of future captains/barons, after all. Then I'd just have to bring in a new 'character' to fill the bodyguard spot. Perfect!

Re: Character Ideas
Just a quick Question again before I can create my Character. I don't know if this is true but if you are a Bishop or something similar you are not allowed to have a wife/family/kids?
Can I be appointed by the church to rule the land but just be an upstart noble who has gained favor within the church. I think my character should have a family/kids to carry on the title.

Re: Character Ideas
In the real world atleast, bishops were granted titles because they could have no kids so that the king wouldn't be stuck with some child who is incapable to for such a position.

Moved here to keep the Biography thread just for the biographies.
As to the story itself, I like it though I would recommend that the family joined an ongoing siege with Mordred of Javiksholm of their free volition - its very unlikely that they would have had the resources of their own to take down a king, even a weakened one. It also gives you a stronger reason as to Mordred's favouring the family, not only did they donate resources and troops to his cause, but they actually fought at his side in the siege.
@Psychozoa; that sounds fine, I think someone else is planning to do the same. The Church would very likely have secular lords who paid them tithes rather than direct clerical service.
Re: Character Ideas
The only Church that we've established as requiring celibacy is the Astraean/Dawn one. Any of the others could conceivably allow it, at least I wouldn't care if you wished to go that route. Although I think one of the benefits of going with religious appointment is that you aren't tied to a dynasty! You can create a successor out of thin air that is of whatever additional backstory you please. Your Sarleon-born Bishop can be succeeded by a D'shar nomad who had a divine revelation and joined that faith, ultimately becoming the next bishop.
I was going to use Tysha's brother as a priest of Eunomia Stabilis or some such... and he's celibate. I'm content to change that to any other though, as it's the smallest of background details.

Read Vincent's bio. I think they might get along, being both Fierdvain and born none noble...as long as he doesn't meet Vin's companion.

Re: Character Ideas
I like it Pravenstern, though I would add a caveat; most of the Ravenspear have fled abroad. Poinsbruk is a wreck, and the Dragons hold them at least somewhat responsible (though not nearly so much as the Silvermists) for the loss of Dragontooth.
That said, you do not know that there were survivors, and as such do rather see yourselves in the sole heirs of the order.
You really are a hold out bastion, so do not expect reinforcements (beyond the odd knight or company which you "hire" later).

Re: Character Ideas
Ah, Quirus doesn't know about others moving abroad (a month in captivity tends to do that). I will most likely hire order knights when given a chance and treat them as having been trained from normal knights and surviving retainers and the few surviving knights who found their way to the bastion.Mordred wrote:I like it Pravenstern, though I would add a caveat; most of the Ravenspear have fled abroad. I am aware of Poinsbruk's situation, did the bio give any indication otherwise. Dragons dislike Raven Spear? That is mutual hate in Quirus' eyes then (AKA Perfect).
Yes, I am playing to the last survivors part and I am not really expecting anything. There aren't really reinforcements to receive in the first place.
